Ginger Buswell and Moneta Goldsmith, founders of the monthly litmag\/reading series, When in Drought, also read.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, my camera ran out of space near the end of the evening, and some of the questions\u00a0and answers\u00a0were not recorded.\u00a0Which minimal poem was the first? Who was the first reader and what was the first reaction? These were my questions that were not recorded.\u00a0Aram Saroyan said\u00a0the first minimalist poem was &#8216;<strong>eyeye<\/strong>&#8216;; the first reader was poet\u00a0<strong>Ted Berrigan<\/strong>;\u00a0the first reaction was: <strong>&#8220;What the fuck is this?&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0In an <a href=\"http:\/\/dirt-zine.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/aram-saroyan-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> to <em>Dirt<\/em>, a minimalist journal, Aram Saroyan fills in the details:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #111111;\">A lot of my better known concrete poems, like &#8216;eyeye&#8217;, were written very early on. Ted Berrigan, who was about ten years older than I was and a sort of mentor, saw that poem one night among a sheaf of papers I had with me at Le Metro Coffee House, where we used to read our poetry on Wednesday nights\u2014it was right around the corner from St. Mark&#8217;s Church, where the Poetry Project started up a year or two later\u2026 Ted saw that poem and said in this slow, wry drawl that he had: &#8216;What the fuck is this?&#8217; and laughed quietly.
