Historical epoch
I’m using the word historicalwith
all steadfastness as vertiginous were the events that
incinerated my brief childhood like a tattoo and got
branded in my inner world. I am one of the lucky people
who saw the Soviet Union through child’s eyes. And have
you been a Hoktemberik (a schoolchild honoured by this
title of integration into Communist league in Soviet
times, the name derives from the October Revolution
in 1917, the honoured schoolchildren put on a specific
pin after an award ceremony), have you ever nourished
the bliss of becoming a Pioneer (the higher schoolchild
title succeeding Hoktemberik in 3 years, schoolchildren
wear a red tie like a kerchief after an award ceremony)?
I always recall it with a kind and covert smile… Chernobyl,
Perestroika, Glasnost, the fall of the Berlin Wall,
earthquake, thousands of corpses and rallies, Karabakh
war, widespread interracial hostility, the collapse
of the Soviet Union, reformation of the political map,
the independence of Armenia, the formation of the Republic
of Armenia at times of war, unprecedented and blind
revival of the national spirit, total mobilisation,
corpses, blockade, crisis, poverty, starvation, disappointment,
hopelessness, madness… |
